perks of being in the noble day job ;)

yes, one of the perks being in the world of instructing/educating is that you get to have an access to these what i call 'treasures' in the univ. library ;D. i hover this area once in every while to check the shelves with what's new. there are always lots and lots of new reads; and i often lament on the mounds of books to read that our fleeting life in this world will never match the needed time to stay longer to forever--just so to read 'em all ;(.

oh the joys of reading! rightly guided for choices can unlock excitement in the world of learning and wisdom, ' can even humble you down because the more you discover many things from its written pages, the more you realize, you know not a thing, and the need to-- hover more and longer, and bothers you henceforth.

one of the agendas i have, in the 'world to come' -- would be just to sit and discover yet.

this is a tiny version and replica of the make-up pouch/design that was quite rampant in the 80s up to the  90s. we had many versions of it from generic cheap ;D to serious ones--signature, branded, labeled and tagged-haha--the serious ones are used by our moms and aunts--the knock-offs are with us, we were college students then; armed with pressed powder, liners, and lipsticks--- this is the kind and design that housed our armaments. 'was happy to see this again--make-ups wont fit in here tho', just these little things that usually gets lost in the bigger pouch. the last one in store at a mall i frequent:(. 'twas in bad shape upon rescue. it is perfect now. restored and embellished ;D.

why we blog

"blogs are no fad. they are cheap and easy to do. and blogs fulfill that deepest of human needs as defined by psychologist Abraham Maslow: self-actualization. people write blogs because they want to know themselves and want to become known by others and because they want their lives to count. when a communication medium is.... tapping into a deep need, it's no fad."
_rich karlgaard, publisher of Forbes magazine, on his blog, Dec. 25, 2005

"blogging is a symptom of something much bigger that's happening."
_dave sifry, ceo technorati

"my blog is place for me to occasionally climb up a podium and pound on my bible and work out ideas by writing"
_henry copeland, founder and ceo, blogads.com

"BLOG: i like that it's roughly onomatopoeic(if you wonder what the heck is that word, here) of vomitting. these sites (mine included!) tend to be kind of information upbucking"

_peter merholz, who coined the term "blog" in 1995 as a contraction of "web" and "log"

those are quoted directly from DebbieWeil's  "The Corporate Blogging"

it is all about blogging as a contemporary networking, marketing, advertising, and how the companies and corporations can maximize the use of their employees' blogs to further the cause of
their mission, goal, goodwill, public relations, --definitely promotions, and yes selling. outlined and discussed further are the ethics in the blogosphere. the nature of blogging, and the creative use of it.

and from the author's words of encouragement to join the noise here: " go make it happen. have fun. life is short. it's also messy and wonderful. like blogging."

to all the bloggers and readers as well in the sphere, a lovely weekend to you!

happiness.

i am always drawn to books that has fascinating insights.
recorded experiences by people who've been there--yeah, done it, seen it... and gracefully gotten themselves out of the mess--they have made for themselves :-(

here's one--i finished reading in several sittings (it happens when i have so much interest). this is an old one
scoured from a dingy bookstore. (the more dingy it is--sometimes--the better. serendipity happens in places like this)

here.. read on...

- "give." better to give. there's a reciprocity.
- "find work that you like, and you will be playing"
and when you find what you like, keep at it. happy people are busy people.
- "marry late. never marry before 30. you've got to grow up first"
- "never marry for sex. it's as easily available as popsicles, and as lasting. marry for friendship. passion
may or not last, probably not, but intelligence and character are forever. never use your cock as a    weathervane. the wind change constantly on everything except maturity and character."
- "be disciplined. be moderate. and above all, get beyond self. he who would save his life must loose it,' not so? you've got to give yourself to something, some person, some cause beyond your skin, or you'll become bleakly introspect and self-absorbed. self is marvelous, but excessive self is a sink-hole."
- "never aim at mere security. ramble along and don't expect anything to be permanent"
- "take risks, be enthusiastic-selective, but enthusiastic. never doubt that the diamond at the heart of your happiness is as hard, and more significant, than the lump of coal underlying your sorrow."
-"believe in joy. believe in yourself . there has never been a "you" before, and you're unique.
- "assume a confidence if you have it not. it works"
- that's a 'virtue'---"assume a virtue"

"this life is a matter of attitude. thinking the right thoughts is what makes all the difference in the world. march right up to life, look it in the eye, and stare it down. if you roll over, you'll get stomped; if you stand up, they'll salute. simple as that."

that is the conversation between nalorian, grimsby, bert, nubar... mclaughlin (the main character in this fiction) had gone home early. they are colleagues--professors at the Chiliast University, Toronto.
interesting (biting, lots of exuberant dialogue...) book looking into the daily life and grind of work of these professors. an insightful one.

why artists are poor?

the title of the book is so intriguing that i checked it out immediately upon seeing this at the university library.
its their new acquisition. i saw the price
(ha!) there was yet the receipt inserted--its php 2,700.00 about $34.on amazon.
--ahhh one of few the perks of being in the business of molding minds, is that--you can get to borrow books i.e, new acquisitions for three weeks and renew it again for several more times, aint that greyyyt? and then its a noble job-- thats the other perks. darn!hahaha...
notice the the title--it ends with a question mark.not a statement, but more likely a probability. because not all artists are poor--uhh count me out--i'm poor. and scroll up again, there's my educated guess...meanwhile, this book is presented in an erudite manner. social science effect. the author is a social scientist, economist, and a visual artist. and i think he's not poor (anymore). hey ho! this/his book is expensive.(according to my wallet)

here's some excerpts from the book--for i know you too are intrigued... here it goes:

table 1. the mythology of the arts
1. art is sacred
2. through art, artists and art consumers relate to a sacred world
3. art is remote and superfluous
4. art is a gift
5. artists are gifted
6. art serves the general interest
7. art is good for people
8. artists are autonomous; other professionals are not autonomous
9. there is freedom of expression in the arts
10.the work of art is authentic and the artist is the unique creator
11.creating authentic works gives one endless private satisfaction
12.artists are selfless
ly devoted to art
13.artists are only intrinsically motivated
14.money and commerce devalue art
15.artistic quality can only exist if it is independent of costs and demand
16.artists have to suffer
17.talent is natural or God-given
18.everybody has the same chance of being gifted or talented
19.certain talents in the arts only appear later in someone's career
20.because extraordinary talent is rare, only in large pool of artists can provide society with a few extremely talented artists
21.success in the arts depend on talent and commitment exclusively
22.the arts are free. the barriers that exists in other professions are absent in the arts
23.successful artists are often self-taught
24.given the talent and commitment, equal chances exists in the arts;the best is the victorious
25.because the best win,the arts are democratic and righteous
26.the high incomes earned by the artists are fair

"the myths or persistent beliefs about art and artists make the economy of the arts exceptional"

and here's some
more..

"the most striking aspect in these pattern is the 2 faced character economy of the arts. the contrast is visible from outward signs.
-the world of splendor, of magnificent opera houses, chic openings, of artist earning very high incomes and of rich donors whose status is enhanced by their association with the arts. on the other hand there is the large majority of artists earning little or nothing; often they lose money by working in the arts and make up for the losses by working in second jobs or accepting support from their partners. moreover large sums of social security and other allowances not intended for the arts flow in it.

the contrast also shows from attitudes in the arts that are intrinsically 2 faced. on the other hand money and commerce are rejected. on the other hand trade is very present in the temple of sacred art, as it was in the temple of the Jews. the temple of art cannot exist without trade. moreover, the trade in art profits from the belief that art is sacred and beyond commerce. for art dealers denying the economy is profitable: it is commercial to be anti-commercial. such denial and simultaneous embrace of money is present
in almost any transactions in the arts. does this double moral standard contribute to the strong contrast
between wealth and poverty in the arts?"

brothers and sisters :-) if you still want to continue with the readings, heres the info about the book:
